“The abuse and humiliation of people living with dementia at Craigavon Area Hospital was an appalling violation of their dignity, privacy and trust.

Older people do not lose their fundamental rights because they are living with dementia or depend upon others for their care. Degrading behaviour must never be dismissed as humour or allowed to become normalised.

Families should feel confident asking questions about their loved one’s care, speaking to them privately where possible and raising concerns about unexplained injuries or changes in their mood, behaviour, appearance or personal care.

However, responsibility for preventing abuse must sit squarely with care providers and those responsible for overseeing them. Robust recruitment, appropriate staffing, regular safeguarding training and clear rules governing mobile phones, photography and social media are essential. Providers must also create a culture in which staff challenge and report abusive behaviour immediately, without fear of being ignored or penalised.
